Friday, 08 May 2020.
A village in Guatemala has been named after Serbia as a token of gratitude for the assistance extended to its locals by Honorary Consul of the Republic of Serbia in Guatemala Marcela Arzu de Lozano. As a personal donation, she provided aid in the form of essential food products for around one hundred impoverished families in the Guatemalan village which was not given a name so far, but the villagers have expressed their gratitude by naming it the municipality of Serbia.

The gesture represents a continuation of the strengthening of friendly ties existing between the Republic of Serbia and Guatemala, following their renewal in March last year when Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia Ivica Dacic paid a visit to this Central American country. On the visit, a street in downtown Guatemala City was inaugurated bearing the name of our Nobel Prize winner Ivo Andric. On the occasion of the return visit by Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala Sandra Polanco to Serbia, in September last year, a street in Belgrade was named after the Guatemalan Nobel Laureate Miguel Ángel Asturias.
