The Republic of Slovenia and the Republic of Croatia together have launched the idea of the "Brdo Process" during the informal meeting of the then Prime Ministers of the two countries, Borut Pahor and Jadranka Kosor, in Kranjska Gora, in January 2010.

The Brdo Process was formally initiated by the meeting of the Western Balkan leaders in Brdo near Kranj, on 20 March 2010. As an informal regional initiative, the process got its name "Brdo Process" according to the venue of holding.

The aim of establishing the aforementioned regional initiative was to strengthen the ties in the Western Balkans region, so that the strengthened cooperation in the region would help its faster progress towards the European integration.

By the presidential "Brdo-Brioni" meeting in Budva on 7 and 8 June 2015, the initiators as well as the organizers of this regional initiative, in particular by including a broader range of topics, confirmed that they wanted the Brdo-Brioni" initiative to reflect, in a stronger way, the spirit of good co-operation in the region and restoration of the vision of the region as a part of the European Union, emphasizing the need of further reforms.

Extraordinary Summitof the Brdo-Brioni Process on a common strategic vision of a united, free and secure Europe was held in Zagreb, on 25 November 2015. The Summitwas attended by all the leaders of the Brdo-Brioni Process participating countries. At the Summit, the leaders adopted a document entitled "Conclusions on Common Strategic Vision of Europe whole, free and at peace."
