Serbian Ambassador in Washington Marko Djuric said that the 140th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Serbia and the United States was a historically remarkable one, and that he believed that the long-standing partnership would transform into something even more meaningful and substantial.
In a column for The Pavlovic Today portal, the Ambassador noted that a new relation would let us continuously discover new areas of cooperation in promoting peace and stability in our part of the world, a relation that would provide new economic opportunities.
"I believe I am not exaggerating when I say that the stars are aligned for us to take part in the opening of a new, unprecedented chapter of mutually beneficial friendship and cooperation. From here on, onwards and upwards, my friends", Djuric said.
He said that his opinion was that in terms of mentality, Serbs were more similar to Americans than many other European nations, i.e., that Americans were closer to Serbs than some countries that may be geographically closer.
Djuric recalled that through both World Wars, relations between Serbia and The United States remained steadfast, as millions of Serbs fought alongside Americans for values held in common by the two peoples.
According to the Ambassador, millions of Serbs, freedom-loving like Americans, motivated by freedom, made their way to the United States of America, enriching the country's history and having their names now engraved in the hall of fame of the American dream.
"Nikola Tesla, the inventor of alternating current electricity, which we all use every day. Pupin, the inventor of long-range wireless telecommunications. NBA's Vlade Divac and Nikola Jokic, to name a few. Them, along with many thousands of Serbian doctors, nurses, engineers, construction workers, and university professors who gave their contribution to the American nation, became a part of it, and made it a better place", Djuric said.
Djuric added that the United States and Serbia, in the past 140 years, treaded along a common path that was rocky and challenging at times, especially in 1999, but that it had been and still remained a path filled with partnership, crucial alliances, and common values.
Ambassador Djuric also emphasized that Serbia, due to comprehensive reforms of Aleksandar Vucic, was able, in just seven years, to rise from the verge of bankruptcy to the first place in Europe, in terms of GDP.
