altAt the initiative launched by Serbian Ambassador Dragan Zupanjevac, cleaning-up of Kibera, the largest slums in Eastern Africa, began on 23 January. Together with UN Habitat, the UN agency in charge of solid waste management, and several ambassadors to the UN, local politicians and the media, attended the Kibera cleaning operation.

The young activists who took part in the removal of waste wore T-shirts with UN symbols and the flag of Serbia. UN-Habitat Executive Director Maimunah Mohd Sharif said this was the start of a serious programme of cooperation between the UN and the slums in Kenya, thanking the Serbian Ambassador for his initiative.

Our Ambassador once helped two Kibera soccer players to come to Serbia for training and attended a charity soccer tournament when he established close relations with the youth organization of this settlement. A few months ago, at their invitation, Ambassador Zupanjevac attended the cleaning of the accumulated waste in the slums and came out with idea of putting them in touch with the UN organization.
