The Communique on the establishment of diplomatic relations was signed in 2012. South Sudan intends to cover Serbia from Moscow and Serbia plans to cover South Sudan from Addis Ababa.

Meetings of officials have taken place on the margins of international and regional conferences.
Economic relations:
Possibilities are open for economic cooperation (agricultural, infrastructural, defense/economic cooperation). Deputy Foreign Minister of South Sudan attended the Food & Beverage Fair in Belgrade, 9-12 February 2012.
