Diplomatic relations were interrupted from 1952. They were re-established on 13 July 1966, based on the Protocol of 25 June 1966.


Upon the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI on 28 February 2013, Pope Francis was elected in the fifth ballot. Enthronement of Pope Francis was held on 19 March 2013 and was attended by the delegation of the Republic of Serbia headed by President Nikolic. MFA I. Mrkic was a member of the delegation, too.

Political relations:

Visits:

- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia Ivica Dačić paid an official visit to the Holy See, on January 30, 2018, when he met with State Secretary Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Secretary for Relations with the States, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.
- The former Secretary for Relations with States, D. Mamberti, paid an official visit to the Republic of Serbia, from 27 June to 1 July 2014.
- The President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, Cardinal Kurt Koch, visited the Republic of Serbia from 25 to 29 May 2015.
- An official visit of President T. Nikolic took place on 11 September 2015. Apart from the audience with Pope Francis, President Nikolic held talks with the State Secretary, P. Parolin, and Secretary for Relations with States P. R. Gallagher.
- Secretary for Relations with States P. R. Gallagher took part in the 22nd OSCE Ministerial Council meeting, which was held in Belgrade, 3-4 December 2015.
- On the occasion of the Catholic jubilee of the Edict of Milan, Cardinal Angelo Scola, Special Envoy of Pope Francis, visited Belgrade and Nis, from 19 to 21 September 2013.


Bilateral agreements
