Aca Jovanovic with Ambassador Mehmet SamsarA round of consular consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey, at the level of Assistant Ministers responsible for consular relations, was held on 24 October 2018 in Ankara. The delegation of the Serbian Foreign Ministry was headed by Ambassador Aca Jovanovic, Acting Assistant Minister for consular relations, while the delegation of the Turkish Foreign Ministry was headed by Ambassador Mehmet Samsar, Director General for Consular Affairs.

In the consultations, views were exchanged on the mutual consular cooperation and other current issues of common interest. Both sides estimated the consular relations between the two countries as very good, with no specific problems and open issues. The delegations also discussed the necessary amendments to the existing agreements as well as the signing of new agreements in the consular field. In this connection, it was agreed to embark on updating the Consular Convention between the SFRY and R. Turkey (effective as from 1971) in line with the current needs of the two sides, with the aim of an enhanced protection of rights and interests of the two countries. They agreed to continue the cooperation and regular exchange of experiences in the consular field, particularly concerning the provision of consular protection to citizens in emergency and urgent situations.

This round of consular consultations had a substantive character, being held in the spirit of friendly relations. Both sides conveyed their readiness for the further promotion of consular cooperation between R. Serbia and R. Turkey.
