The Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia in the United Mexican States, Mr. G. Mesic, has signed with the Secretary General, Victoria Marina de Aviles, the Agreement between the Republic of Serbia and SICA admitting Serbia as its new extra-regional observer. The agreement was signed on the margins of the Meeting of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs from the Central American Integration System (SICA) held on 17 December, in San Salvador, El Salvador.

The admission to SICA as an extra-regional observer will allow Serbia to participate in the meetings of Heads of State or Ministerial Councils of SICA member states, as well as to strengthen cultural, social and political relations between the two parties.

The initiative for the admission of the Republic of Serbia to the Central American Integration System as an extra-regional observer is consistent with the Republic of Serbia's key foreign policy priorities and its intention to develop and advance friendly relations with all countries of the world and to strengthen its presence in those geographical regions in which it used to be significant in the second half of the twentieth century.

SICA member states are: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and the Dominican Republic. Regional observers are Mexico, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Peru, USA, Ecuador, Uruguay and Colombia, whereas extra-regional observers include Spain, Germany, Italy, France, Holy See, United Kingdom, EU, Morocco, Qatar, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Republic of Korea and Taiwan.
