Canberra: Commemorative event on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Great War |

The central WWI anniversary commemorative event for Australia "Serbia in the Great War – Australian testimonies" was held at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, on 25 October 2014.
The organizer of this event was the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Australia, in cooperation with the Australian War Memorial, Metropolitanate of Australia and New Zealand of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Youth Association SOYA and many representatives of the Serbian community in Australia. At the beginning of the programme, participants were addressed by Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia in Australia Miroljub Petrovic, member of the Australian Federal Parliament Peter Handy and His Grace Bishop Irinej on behalf of the Metropolitanate of Australia and New Zealand of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The book "Serbia in the Great War 1914-1918", by M. Radojevic and Lj. Dimic, in English, was presented during the commemorative academy, as well as a publication – a special edition of the journal "Trans-cultural Studies", in which a manuscript of the well-known Australian writer Stella Miles Franklin "Six months with the Serbs – it doesn't matter" as well as her play "Near the faraway Kaymakchalan" were published in full for the first time. On this occasion, the life story of Olive Kelso King, an Australian woman who spent more than two years on the Salonika front in the Serbian army units driving an ambulance, and after the war continued her humanitarian work in Serbia. The commemorative event was attended by about 200 guests, among them the representatives of numerous Australian institutions, members of the diplomatic corps in Canberra, as well as members of the Serbian community in Australia. |
