Austrian Minister confident that Serbia will open some chapters by the end of the year

Dacic - KurzFirst Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia Ivica Dacic met today with Minister for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Austria Sebastian Kurz.

Minister Dacic assessed the bilateral relations between the two countries as very good and expressed readiness to further improve them. He thanked Austria for its support in the European integration process and stressed that Serbia was fully prepared for EU accession negotiation. The Serbian Foreign Minister said to his Austrian counterpart that Serbia expected support from Austria to open first negotiation chapters by the end of the year. Dacic assessed that the selection of Austria's Johannes Hahn as European Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy and the EU enlargement negotiations was a good news for Serbia, because he knew the region and was committed to the policy of enlargement.

Regarding the upcoming Serbian OSCE Chairmanship, Minister Dacic underlined the readiness to intensify the mutual contacts in order to successfully implement the OSCE priorities and strengthen its contribution to the establishment of stability.

On this occasion Minister Dacic welcomed the candidacy of Germany and Austria as the next OSCE Chairmen-in-Office.

The Austrian Foreign Minister congratulated the Serbian colleague on a very positive EC Progress Report on Serbia and expressed his conviction that our country would open one or two negotiating chapters by the end of the year. He underlined that Austria strongly supported Serbia in the negotiation process, as well as that he would pledge himself with the other European partners to have some chapters opened by the end of the year.

During the talks, Dacic thanked Austria which was among the first to send its assistance to Serbia after the country suffered from floods.

Minister Kurz said that he came to visit Serbia accompanied by representatives of the Austrian humanitarian organizations in order to see the extent of the flood damage and how the aid provided by the Republic of Austria was used.
