Johannesburg : WWI Photography Exhibition

PretoriaOfficial Academy dedicated to the marking of the WWI centenary was held in Johannesburg, on St. Vitus' Day, 28 June 2014. The Academy was co-organized by the Serbian Cultural-Artistic Society Africa, Serbian Orthodox Parish St. Sava and the Serbian school St. Sava.   Serbian Ambassador to the Republic of South Africa Mr. Bozin Nikolic addressed the guests, pointing to the basic facts and the role of Serbia in WWI. Mr. Kosta Babic, one of the eldest members of the Diaspora in South Africa, made a welcome speech. The photography exhibition, dedicated to the fight for freedom and to suffering of the Serbian people during WWI, was opened with the lines of Milutin Bojic's Plava grobnica (Ode to a Blue Sea Tomb).

The opening of the exhibition was preceded by a church service and a prayer dedicated to the victims of the Great War. On the occasion, a commemorative plaque was unveiled at the church premises, marking 625th anniversary of the Battle of Kosovo, 210 years of the First Serbian Uprising, and 100 years of the WWI outbreak. The plaque has an inscription upon it: "To all the Serbian heroes who gave their lives defending their homeland".
