The Republic of Serbia welcomes the information of the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon on the findings of the UN Mission tasked to investigate the use of chemical weapons in Syria. We support the condemnation of chemical weapons. As a State Party to the Convention on the prohibition of chemical weapons and on their destruction, we are in favour of its complete elimination.

We consider extremely important the accession to the Chemical Weapons Convention by Syria, believing that Syria has thus demonstrated responsibility and made an important step towards the establishment of peace and the easing of tensions in the entire region.

The use of chemical weapons is a serious violation of international law. We firmly believe that the role of the United Nations is crucial for an impartial investigation of such cases and we strongly support further decisive engagement of the United Nations in this regard.
