unBefore the United Nations Security Council session which will review the regular quarterly progress report on Kosovo and Metohija, Mrkic met in New York, today, with UNMIK Chief Farid Zarif, who stated that changes had been noted at KiM following the signing of the Agreement between Belgrade and Pristina in Brussels, says the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Zarif informed Mrkic extensively on the security situation on the ground and the Serbian Foreign Minister underlined as very important the presence and engagement of UNMIK, whose activity, as he put it, must be highly unbiased.

Mrkic and Zarif agreed that UNMIK was a very important factor of stability in Kosovo and Metohija and that its role would be irreplaceable in the future as well.

Foreign Minister Mrkic also met with US Ambassador to the United Nations Rosemary DiCarlo, who congratulated him on what the Serbian Government had achieved in terms of strengthening its own position and improvement of its image in the world.

The US Ambassador stressed that ever more frequent contacts between the highest representatives of the United States and Serbia were of the utmost importance.

Mrkic and DiCarlo agreed that it was essential to implement the Agreement between Belgrade and Pristina, signed by the delegations of Belgrade and Pristina in Brussels, and concluded that the reason for this was the fact that the stability of the region would attract foreign investments. Mrkic asked DiCarlo to see to it that the Serbs convicted by the ICTY serve their sentences in prisons in Serbia, and DiCarlo told Mrkic that the United States would encourage its European friends to support Serbia in its efforts to continue to pursue its European integration path.
