Political relations:
Traditionally good relations have been less developed in previous years, due to objective circumstances. The work of our Embassy in Baghdad was re-established in June 2003, first at the level of Chargé d'Affaires sur pied and in 2005 at the level of Ambassador. The Embassy was temporarily dislocated between late June and early August 2014, due to security threats related to ISIL.
The new Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to Iraq, Uros Balov, assumed his duties in April 2018, while Iraqi Ambassador to Serbia Fakri Hassan Mahdi Al-Issa presented his Letter of Credence on 10 September 2018.
Iraq does not recognize the unilaterally declared independence of "Kosovo" and it does not support Kosovo's applications for membership in international organizations.
Economic relations:
Economic relations between Serbia and Iraq are currently based mainly on military and economic cooperation. In 2017, Serbian exports to Iraq amounted to EUR 19.26 million, and imports to EUR 421.37 million (crude oil is the chief import). From January to August 2018, Serbian exports amounted to EUR 5.8 million, and imports to EUR 340.2 million. Major Serbian exports to Iraq include cigarettes, food, medications, household appliances, air conditioning units, flooring, certain food items, paper goods, home furnishings, plumbing products, construction and electro material. The last session of the Joint Committee on Cooperation was held in 2001 in Baghdad.
