The relations between the two countries, characterized by a comprehensive strategic partnership, are traditionally good and friendly. The People's Republic of China is one of the major pillars in the foreign policy of the Republic of Serbia.

Political relations:

President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic participated in the Leaders Roundtable of the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, held in Beijing between 13 and 17 May 2017, when he had separate bilateral meetings with President of PR China Xi Jinping and Premier of the State Council of PR China Li Keqiang. Eight bilateral agreements were signed during the visit.

Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic, at the invitation of Mr. Zhang Dejiang, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, was on a return visit to PR China between 24 November and 1 December 2017, and in addition to her host, NPC Chairman Zhang Dejiang, also had separate meetings with other Chinese high officials.

Prime Minister of R. Serbia A. Brnabic, headed the delegation of R. Serbia to the 6th Summit of Heads of Government of Central and Eastern European Countries and China, held in Budapest between 26 and 28 November 2017, on which occasion, in addition to participating in the plenary session, she met with Premier of the State Council (Government) of PR China Li Keqiang at the margins of the event.

Then Prime Minister of R. Serbia A. Vucic participated in the Fifth Summit of Heads of Government of China and CEE countries in Riga, on 5-6 November 2016, when he had a bilateral meeting with PM of the Republic of China Li Keqiang. PM of RS A. Vucic was on an official visit to the People's Republic of China on 23/27 November 2015, and participated at the China-CEEC Summit in Sujou.

At the invitation of the Mayor of Beijing to mark the 35th anniversary of signing the Agreement on cooperation between Belgrade and Beijing, Belgrade Mayor S. Mali paid a visit to Beijing on 25/31 October 2015.

Then President of RS T. Nikolic paid a visit to PRC from 31 August to 4 September 2015 to attend a ceremony marking 70 years since the end of WWII (75 soldiers of SAF participated in a solemn military parade).

Meng Jianzhu, member of the Politburo Standing Committee and Secretary of Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China, was on a visit to R. Serbia on 10-11 September 2017. Mayor of Beijing Chen Jining was on a return visit to Belgrade on 16-17 September 2017.

Zhang Dejiang, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, visited R. Serbia between 16 and 18 July 2017 when he had meetings with top officials of Republic of Serbia.

President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping made the first official visit to RS on 17/19 June 2016, when 23 agreements and memoranda of cooperation were signed.

FDPM and MFA I. Dacic was on a visit to China between 14 and 17 December 2016.

Chinese Vice-Premier Zhang Gaoli visited RS on 22/24 June 2015.

PM Li Keqiang visited RS on 15/18 December 2014 and on that occasion the Third Summit of China-CEEC was held in Belgrade. Then PM Vucic and PM Li officially inaugurated "Mihajlo Pupin" Bridge (Zemun-Borca), and PM Li was awarded the Charter of Honorary Citizen of Belgrade. During his visit to RS, PM Li held separate talks with PR T. Nikolic, and MFA of PR of China Wang Yi met in a separate meeting with FDPM and MFA I. Dacic.


Economic relations:

PR China is the largest trading partner of RS in Asia. Total trade in goods in 2017 amounted to EUR 1,623 billion, of which Serbian exports amounted to EUR 55,0 million and imports from China to EUR 1,567 billion. In 2016, goods worth €22.9 million were exported from the Republic of Serbia to the People's Republic of China, while the value of imports from China amounted to €1.45 billion. The 10th session of the Joint Committee for Economic and Trade Cooperation was held in Belgrade on 5 July 2013. Agreement on economic and technical cooperation on infrastructure projects in 2009 gave an impetus to the intensification of economic relations, which resulted in the cooperation on several major infrastructure projects in the Republic of Serbia - Construction of Pupin's Bridge (Zemun-Borca), thermal power plant "Kostolac" project, the construction of two highway sections Obrenovac-Ljig of Corridor 11 and others. One of the most important projects between RS and China, which is carried out in the context of the cooperation mechanism between China and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, is the modernization and construction of the Belgrade-Budapest railway, which includes Hungary, too. On 18 April 2016, the Government of Serbia signed a contract with the Chinese company He Steel on the sale of assets of Smederevo Steelworks, the takeover of which was completed by the end of June 2016.
