Serbia elected to the UN Economic and Social Council

ecosoc logoThe Republic of Serbia was elected member of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in the elections held at the UN General Assembly on 30th October, for a three-year period from 2014 to 2016, with the possibility of re-election. ECOSOC is the leading UN body in social and economic fields, and the environment protection. The last time Serbia had an ECOSOC seat was in 1992.

ECOSOC has the central role when it comes to discussing the implementation of development objectives and decisions of major international conferences, and in the coordination of the UN system activities and specialized agencies, supervision of the work of subsidiary bodies and functional commissions in economic and socio-humanitarian areas, and on the issues related to environmental protection, which makes up 70% of the total activity of the world Organization.
